Short answer: a box for an 8–10 oz jar candle starts at about 100 × 100 × 120 mm interior (3.9 × 3.9 × 4.7 in); a three-wick candle at about 130 × 130 × 110 mm (5.1 × 5.1 × 4.3 in). Our book-style candle box is listed at 120 × 120 × 130 mm single and 240 × 130 × 130 mm twin, for jars about 60–110 mm in diameter.
Candle volume does not fix the jar size: measure the filled jar with its lid on, then size the insert and box around it.
Common candle box sizes
Interior sizes, length × width × height, from the master chart in our gift box size guide and our candle product pages. They are starting points; the final size is set from your filled jar.
| Box | Interior (mm) | Interior (in) | What it holds | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jar candle box (8–10 oz) | 100 × 100 × 120 mm | 3.9 × 3.9 × 4.7 in | One jar candle | Candle boxes |
| Book-style candle box, single | 120 × 120 × 130 mm | 4.7 × 4.7 × 5.1 in | One jar, about 60–110 mm diameter | Candle gift box |
| Three-wick candle box | 130 × 130 × 110 mm | 5.1 × 5.1 × 4.3 in | One wide three-wick jar | Candle boxes |
| Book-style candle box, twin | 240 × 130 × 130 mm | 9.4 × 5.1 × 5.1 in | Two jars, one cavity each | Candle gift box |
| Square 8 × 8 × 3 in | 203 × 203 × 76 mm | 8.0 × 8.0 × 3.0 in | A candle with an accessory | Square sizes |
| Shipping mailer | 200 × 150 × 80 mm | 7.9 × 5.9 × 3.1 in | A single candle jar, shipped | Mailer |
Round candles and travel tins can go in a cylinder tube: common diameters are Ø40, Ø50, Ø65, Ø83, Ø100 and Ø120 mm, with a 1.2–2.5 mm wall. Candles with a diffuser, oils or soap go in a candle and aromatherapy set box with one cavity per item.
What size box do I need for an 8 oz candle?
Start at about 100 × 100 × 120 mm interior (3.9 × 3.9 × 4.7 in) for an 8–10 oz jar. Candle volume does not define the jar: two 8 oz jars can differ in diameter and height, so measure the filled jar with the lid on. If the jar is 60–110 mm in diameter, our book-style box at 120 × 120 × 130 mm is the single-jar starting size.
What should I measure on a candle jar?
| Measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Maximum body diameter | Sets the insert opening and the box footprint |
| Height with the lid on | Sets the box height; lid projection counts |
| Filled weight | Sets the board and the insert; a filled 8 oz jar is about 1 lb (450 g) |
| Shoulder and base profile | Decides where the insert can hold the jar |
| No-contact surfaces | Label and wax face; the insert can sit below the rim line |
Measure the filled jar, not an empty container drawing: a collar that looks tight around an empty jar can behave differently with the filled weight.
How thick should a candle box be?
Use at least 2 mm greyboard for a jar candle box. A filled 8 oz jar weighs about 1 lb (450 g), and a three-wick or ceramic vessel can weigh about twice that. Board by box size:
| Longest box dimension | Greyboard | Thickness | Typical box |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 150 mm | 1200 gsm | ~2.0 mm | Single jar boxes up to 150 mm |
| 150–250 mm | 1500 gsm | ~2.5 mm | Twin sets and square gift sets |
| Over 250 mm or >1 kg contents | 1800 gsm | ~3.0 mm | Larger sets, or contents over 1 kg |
Board is chosen by the longest box dimension and the filled weight. GSM is mass per area, so the thickness values are nominal; record measured thickness on the approved sample. Detail in the gift box materials guide. For a shipping mailer, B-flute corrugated (about 3 mm) is the choice for glass jars and candles.
Which insert holds a candle jar?
- Paperboard collar: light jars and recyclable presentation; check edge pressure and movement after repeated removal.
- Molded pulp or foam: heavier jars and glass that ships by parcel.
- Finger notch: gives the customer a way to lift the jar out.
Test the filled jar, insert and outer box together on your parcel route; see the ISTA shipping test guide. Board, adhesive and insert odour are reviewed with the actual candle during sampling.
