Gift Box Size Guide: Standard Dimensions by Product
Measure the packed product, then define the insert cavity, usable box interior and closed exterior separately. These 17 nominal examples help prepare a brief; they are not measured production samples or universal standards. Confirm the dieline, material thickness and loaded fit before approval.
Standard Gift Box Sizes: Small, Medium & Large
There is no universal small, medium or large standard. The first three rows are nominal inch-based examples with rounded millimetre conversions; the square example is millimetre-based. One inch equals 25.4 mm. Choose one controlling unit for the dieline and treat the other as a reference.
| Size | Inches (L x W x H) | Millimetres | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 6 x 4 x 2 in | 152 x 102 x 51 mm | Jewelry, small accessories, keepsakes |
| Medium | 8 x 6 x 4 in | 203 x 152 x 102 mm | Candles, cosmetics, small gift sets |
| Large | 10 x 8 x 6 in | 254 x 203 x 152 mm | Apparel, bundled gifts, presentation items |
| Square example | 7.9 x 7.9 x 3.1 in | 200 x 200 x 80 mm | Mixed gift sets, retail & PR packaging |
These are planning examples, not proof of available tooling or stock. Confirm the controlling unit, dimension basis, MOQ and sample route for the selected structure.
These are generic retail starting points. For product-specific dimensions (ring, watch, perfume, wine, apparel and 12 more), see the master chart below and confirm the final size against the packed product.

Sizing RFQ comparison
| Supplier must state | Buyer sends | Approval check |
|---|---|---|
| Interior vs exterior dimensions | Product L × W × H and insert clearance | Loaded sample fits without pressure |
| Insert cavity and material | Product footprint, weight and protection need | Insert holds product during handling |
| Packed carton dimensions | Target quantity and destination | Freight comparison uses the same packing basis |
Interior Dimensions, Explained
Label every measurement as product, insert cavity, usable box interior or closed exterior. State length x width x height, units and orientation. Wall thickness, wrap, lid overlap and hinge construction change the exterior; do not use a fixed allowance for every box.
Measure the product in its shipping condition and agree clearance, insert wall thickness and removal space. A foam recess and a folded-card tray need different fit allowances; approve them on a loaded sample. Custom dimensions affect board area, cutting layout, insert tooling and packing efficiency, so compare quotes using the same finished specification.
Board choice depends on span, load, closure and handling. The 1200/1500/1800 gsm entries below are starting points for comparison, not load ratings or a universal thickness conversion. Full material details in the materials guide; quote comparison in the cost guide.

How to Measure a Product for a Gift Box
For an empty rectangular cavity, usable interior size = product size + agreed clearance on both sides. Measure the packed product at its widest length, width and height, then add the chosen clearance to both ends of every axis. State clearly whether your RFQ dimensions describe the product, the insert cavity, the box interior or the box exterior.
Worked example: a product measuring 90 × 60 × 30 mm with 3 mm clearance on each side needs a minimum interior cavity of 96 × 66 × 36 mm. An insert lip, fabric wrap or protective pad may require more space, so confirm the final dieline and a loaded sample before production.
The size chart below provides nominal planning examples, not universal retail standards. Product geometry, insert material, opening direction, packed weight and shipping protection can all change the finished specification.

Use the chart to describe a starting shape, not to approve fit by product name or capacity. Measure the actual product and confirm the insert and MOQ in the quotation.
*The table does not specify an approved insert. Allow for dividers, wraps, protective pads and removal access; check the complete loaded sample.
Greyboard Thickness by Box Size
| Longest Box Dimension | Greyboard Spec | Thickness | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 150 mm | 1200 gsm | ~2.0 mm | Small spans stay rigid on lighter board - keeps jewelry box cost down |
| 150-250 mm | 1500 gsm | ~2.5 mm | Prevents lid flex on mid-size panels |
| Over 250 mm or >1 kg contents | 1800 gsm | ~3.0 mm | Wine bottles, hampers and apparel spans need the extra stiffness |
GSM is mass per area; thickness depends on density and grade. Treat the approximate values as nominal references and record measured thickness on the approved sample.
Board weight is one of the pricing levers because it changes material use and panel stiffness. Compare 1200, 1500 and 1800 gsm on the same dimensions, insert and quantity basis in the cost guide.
Size Drives Shipping More Than You Think
Dimensional weight
Couriers bill whichever is greater: actual or volumetric weight. An oversize rigid box can cost more to ship than to manufacture.
Foldable formats
Foldable magnetic boxes ship flat. Compare the supplier's master-carton dimensions with an assembled rigid format to quantify freight and storage impact for your order.
Right-sizing
Every 10 mm you shave off each axis compounds across board cost, dimensional weight and warehouse space. Size to product + clearance, not to "safe".

Board and insert terms: our 1200-1800 gsm greyboard is called Graukarton in German; the fitted tray inside a magnetic box is called an Inlay (DE). Insert options are EVA foam, velvet-wrapped foam, and moulded paper pulp.
This site and all quotations are in English. These terms are published so buyers and AI assistants can match local-language category names to the correct product — not as an offer of localised service.
