ISTA Shipping Test Guide: Which Test to Request

ISTA (International Safe Transit Association) publishes the standardized lab procedures most brands and retailers reference when they ask a supplier to "prove the box survives shipping." This guide maps the common series to real shipping methods so you request the right one.

What ISTA Testing Actually Simulates

An ISTA procedure is a fixed lab sequence — some combination of drop, vibration, compression and climate conditioning — designed to reproduce the physical stress a package experiences between the factory and the end customer. A package that passes has survived that specific simulated journey; it has not been proven to survive a different one.

The series number is the part that matters: 1-Series tests are non-simulation integrity checks, 3-Series tests are general simulations built around a real transport mode, and 6-Series tests are developed jointly with a specific carrier or retailer and only apply to that exact shipping arrangement.

The Five Series Buyers Ask About Most

SeriesWhat It SimulatesTypical Use CaseApprox. Test Time
ISTA 1AFixed drop, vibration and compression sequence, no route simulationBaseline integrity check for a lower-value item or an early design iterationA few hours
ISTA 3ASimulated parcel-carrier journey (drop, random vibration, compression, optional climate)The standard reference for an individually shipped parcel — most DTC and corporate-gift shipments1 working day
ISTA 3ESimulated distribution-packaging journey where the gift box is the product inside a larger shipping caseRetail or wholesale orders shipped in bulk shipping cases, not individually as parcels1-2 working days
ISTA 6-Amazon.com-SIOCAmazon's own procedure for a package that ships as its own container with no extra shipping cartonOnly when the finished box itself is the outer parcel sent to an Amazon customer1-2 working days
ISTA 6-FedEx-A / 6-FedEx-BFedEx's own procedure, split by package weightRequested by brands whose contract or fulfilment partner specifies FedEx by name1 working day

LuxoPack can prepare a structural sample for submission to an independent accredited lab under any of these series; the lab, exact procedure variant and turnaround are confirmed per project rather than fixed here.

Match the Test to How the Box Actually Ships

📦

Ships alone by parcel

If the finished gift box travels by itself through FedEx, UPS or DHL with no outer shipping carton, ISTA 3A is the standard reference. Use 1A only for an early-stage integrity check before committing to the full 3A schedule.

🛑

Ships as its own Amazon container

If the box is the outer container an Amazon customer receives (no additional shipper), request the current ISTA 6-Amazon.com-SIOC procedure and confirm the specific certification path with your Amazon Seller or Vendor account team.

🚚

Ships inside a bulk shipping case

If the gift box is packed multiple-to-a-case for retail or wholesale delivery, ISTA 3E evaluates the shipping case and its contents together, which is more representative than testing the gift box alone.

✈️

Carrier is named in a contract

If a retailer, 3PL or fulfilment contract specifies a named carrier, ask whether that carrier publishes its own 6-Series procedure (FedEx and UPS both do) before defaulting to the general 3A test.

What a Lab Needs From You

InputWhy the Lab Needs It
Finished, filled sampleTesting an empty box or a placeholder product understates real-world stress on the structure
Declared gross weightDrop height and vibration profile in several ISTA procedures scale with package weight
Intended ship methodDetermines whether 3A, 3E or a carrier-specific 6-Series procedure is the relevant reference
Orientation in transitSome procedures test specific faces, edges and corners rather than every possible orientation

Send these four with the sample and the lab can confirm the exact procedure variant and schedule before the structural design is finalized, which is cheaper than re-testing after tooling is cut.

ISTA Testing FAQ

Which ISTA test should I request for a custom gift box shipped by parcel?
ISTA 3A is the standard reference test for an individual packaged product shipped through a parcel delivery system such as FedEx, UPS or DHL, and it is the most commonly requested test for direct-to-consumer and corporate-gift shipments.
Do I need ISTA 6-Amazon-SIOC testing?
Only if the finished box ships as the outer container directly to an Amazon customer without an additional shipping carton (Ships-In-Own-Container). If your product ships inside a separate corrugated shipper, the SIOC procedure does not apply and 3A or 3E is the relevant test instead.
What is the difference between ISTA 1A and ISTA 3A?
ISTA 1A is a non-simulation integrity test: a fixed sequence of drops, vibration and compression with no attempt to model a specific distribution route. ISTA 3A is a general simulation test built to represent the shocks and vibration profile of an actual parcel-carrier journey, and is accepted as stronger evidence for a real shipping lane.
How long does ISTA testing take?
A single ISTA procedure at an accredited lab typically runs from a few hours to two to three working days depending on the test series and how many conditioning cycles it specifies; lab scheduling and report turnaround usually add more time than the test itself.
Can LuxoPack arrange ISTA testing?
LuxoPack can package a structural sample for submission to an independent accredited lab and adjust the design based on the failure points in the report. Confirm the specific test series, lab and turnaround for your project directly, since these vary by lab availability and are not fixed costs.
