Custom Packaging Design & Tooling Costs: What Is One-Off, What Repeats

Most quote comparisons go wrong on the one-off line items, not the unit price. A supplier quoting a lower per-box figure can still be more expensive on the first order once the dieline, cutting die, plates and sampling are added — and cheaper on the reorder if that tooling is stored. This page separates the two.

The One-Off Charges in a Packaging Quote

These are the charges that exist once per design, not once per box. Any of them may be quoted separately, absorbed into the unit price, or waived — which is exactly why they have to be itemised before you compare two suppliers.

ChargeWhat it actually isWhat drives itRepeats on reorder?
Structural design / dielineThe flat cutting template for your exact box size, with fold and glue allowancesStructure complexity, number of panels, whether the shape is standard or bespokeNo — unless the size changes
Cutting dieThe physical steel-rule die that cuts the flat blankBlank size, shape complexity, number of cut-outsNo — if the factory stores it

These are the same line items LuxoPack itemises on its own quotations from its Shenzhen plant, so a quote can be compared against another supplier's on a like-for-like basis.

How LuxoPack Handles Each One

Published policy, as stated across this site. Everything below is confirmed in writing on the quotation for your specification — treat this table as the starting position, not the contract.

LuxoPack quotes these directly from its own Shenzhen plant, from 100 pcs on rigid formats — there is no trading-company layer adding a second margin to the tooling line.

Why a Quote With No One-Off Line Is a Warning Sign

A quotation that shows only a unit price has not removed the tooling cost — it has hidden it somewhere. Three things usually happened:

  • It was amortised into the unit price. Fine on the first order, expensive forever after: you keep paying for a die that was already made.
  • It was omitted and will appear later. The revised pro forma arrives after you have approved the sample and lost your leverage.
  • The supplier is a trading company quoting a factory's tooling at a markup, which is also why they cannot tell you whether the die is stored.

The fix is not to hunt for the lowest tooling quote. It is to make every supplier split one-off from repeat, then compare the first-order total and the reorder total as two separate numbers. A supplier who is 8% higher on the first order and stores your tooling free is usually cheaper by the second reorder.

Six Questions to Ask Before You Pay Anything

Copy these into your next enquiry. Ask for the answers in writing — a verbal “no charge” is not a policy.

  • 1. Which charges on this quote are one-off, and which repeat on every order?
  • 2. Is the sample fee refundable or creditable against the bulk order, and at what quantity?
  • 3. Who owns the cutting die and foil die after the first run, and where is it stored?
  • 4. Is there a storage fee, and does it lapse if I do not reorder within a set period?
  • 5. If I change the wrap or the finish but keep the size, which tooling is reused?
  • 6. Is this quotation from the factory that will run the job, or from an agent?

Cross-check the answers against the cost guide for the per-unit side, the MOQ guide for where minimums come from, and the size guide to lock the dimensions before any die is cut.

Design & Tooling Cost FAQ

Is there a design fee for custom packaging?

There does not have to be. LuxoPack provides a free 3D mockup, normally within 24 hours of receiving your logo and box size, and a free structural dieline drawn to your exact dimensions. Other suppliers may charge for either — ask which, in writing, before you send artwork.

What is a mould fee and will I be charged one?

“Mould fee” usually refers to the cutting die and any foil or emboss die made for your design. LuxoPack has no standard mould fee or size surcharge on rigid boxes — they are made to your exact custom dimensions. Printing plates and foil dies are quoted per specification because they scale with colour count and stamped area.

Is the sample fee refundable?

At LuxoPack the physical sample is charged and credited against your first order. This is worth asking every supplier explicitly: many credit it back, some do not, and the answer should be on the quotation rather than in a chat message.

Do I pay tooling again when I reorder?

Not at LuxoPack — tooling is stored after the first run and waived on reorders, so a repeat order skips the setup economics entirely. Elsewhere this varies, and it is the single biggest reason a cheaper first order can become the more expensive relationship.

How do I compare two quotes when only one lists tooling?

Ask both to split one-off from repeat charges, then build two totals: first-order cost including all one-off items, and reorder cost excluding whatever is stored. Compare those two numbers rather than the per-box price, which on its own tells you very little.
