Custom Folding Carton Boxes Manufacturer
Retail-grade folding cartons in 300–400gsm SBS: straight-tuck, reverse-tuck, auto-bottom and window styles with full-bleed offset print, soft-touch and foil. The workhorse product box, printed like a premium one — factory-direct from 500 pcs.
The Workhorse Box, Printed Like a Premium One
Folding cartons carry much of retail because they combine printable surfaces with flat delivery and efficient conversion. Offset lithography can hold gradients and brand colour, but repeatability still needs an approved colour target, substrate and finish rather than a universal tolerance claim.
Structures cover the tuck family: straight-tuck, reverse-tuck, auto-lock bottom, hang-tab tops and window variants. Board options include named SBS, FBB and recycled grades; the correct choice depends on surface, stiffness, fibre requirement and product duty.
Soft-touch lamination, spot UV, foil and emboss can change both appearance and score response, so approve them on the finished structural sample. For heavier shipping duty see corrugated boxes; for peg retail see hang tab boxes.

Pick the tuck for the job:
Straight vs Reverse Tuck
Straight-tuck for premium facing; reverse-tuck when economy matters — we spec it honestly.
Auto-Lock Bottom
Snap-open bases for faster pack-out, qualified against the real product weight and line handling.
Window Cuts
PET or open-window formats that show the product; review protection and destination material rules.
Print Finishes
Soft-touch, foil, spot UV and emboss compared on the finished board and score pattern.
How Do You Specify a Folding Carton?
Short answer: Start with the packed product, retail channel, print standard and closure duty, then select the paperboard. SBS, FBB and recycled grades differ in surface, stiffness, bulk and fibre composition, but the trade name alone is not enough. Quote caliper, grain direction, structure, coating, print coverage, packed weight and the sample checks that decide acceptance.
Board Name, Caliper and Grain Solve Different Problems
The Paperboard Packaging Council describes folding cartons as converted paperboard structures made from virgin or recycled grades and notes that they fold flat for storage and shipping. That efficiency does not remove the need to qualify stiffness, score response and surface for the actual carton.
Ask for a named mill grade or an approved equivalent, not only “white card.” Confirm which direction the grain runs relative to the main folds, because a visually identical layout can fold and bow differently when imposed in the other direction. Heavy ink, lamination and foil also change score behaviour, so approve a printed, finished structural sample rather than a blank white dummy alone.
- State direct-food-contact or migration requirements before choosing recycled or virgin board.
- Define shelf hang, tuck, crash-lock, auto-bottom or glued-seam duty.
- Put barcode grade, colour tolerance and rub resistance into acceptance criteria.
- Check filled-carton squareness, opening force and closure after conditioning.
Select Board by Use, Not by Acronym Alone
| Board family | Typical sourcing reason | Qualification focus |
|---|---|---|
| SBS / solid bleached board | Clean white appearance and demanding print or finishing | Stiffness, caliper, coating, score cracking and fibre-source requirement |
| FBB / folding boxboard | Bulk and stiffness efficiency for many retail cartons | Surface consistency, reverse-side appearance, crease and glue performance |
| Recycled paperboard | Recycled-content target and suitable non-contact applications | Shade variation, odour, surface, compliance boundary and strength at target caliper |
Inputs for a Folding-Carton Dieline and Quote
- Product dimensions, packed weight, loading method and closure requirement.
- Retail channel, shelf orientation, hang-tab or tamper-evidence need.
- Named board grade or performance target, caliper and fibre-content requirement.
- Print standard, coating, foil, emboss, window, barcode and rub criteria.
- Order quantity, flat or erected delivery, packing line and destination compliance.
Worked qualification example
A skincare carton with dense dark ink, soft-touch lamination and a foil panel should be approved in its finished form. A blank structural sample can confirm dimensions and loading, but it cannot reveal whether the printed sheet cracks on the main score, whether the laminate lifts near a lock, or whether glue bonds reliably to the selected surface. Record the mill grade or approved equivalent, caliper, grain direction, print coverage, coating, foil area, crease rule and closure. Then fill the carton with the production-weight item and check squareness, panel bow, opening and closing, barcode readability and visible rub after handling. If a substitute board is proposed later, treat it as a controlled change and compare it against the signed finished sample rather than accepting an acronym or grammage alone.
Flat-delivery efficiency should be reviewed with the buyer's packing line. A carton that stores compactly can still add labour if the lock is difficult to erect or if the tuck catches during filling. Include erection method, line speed, operator access and closure sequence in the sample review so the structural choice works in production as well as on shelf.
