Corrugated Specced by Test, Not by Guess

Corrugated is an engineering product: flute, liner and board grade influence how the converted box responds to its packed load. We start with product weight and courier route, then return the proposed construction and qualification route instead of treating one ECT value as a finished-box guarantee.

Fine flute can support a smoother retail-facing print surface; larger or doublewall structures may be proposed when cushioning or distribution duty dominates. Print can run flexographic for economical spot-colour work or litho-lamination when finer reproduction matters.

FSC-certified board and water-based ink options are available; recyclability must be checked against the complete material specification and destination collection rules. For tear-strip DTC mailers see the mailer range; for branded RSC shippers see shipping boxes with logo.

Corrugated Options

Engineering choices that matter:

🧱

ECT-Specced Board

We spec flute and liner from your product weight and courier route — and share the test basis.

Flexo vs Litho-Lam

Honest guidance on when cheap flexo is enough and when litho-lamination pays back.

Mono-Material Route

Compare FSC board and water-based ink options, then confirm coatings and destination recycling rules.

In-House Dividers

Corrugate inserts and partitions engineered with the box, not bolted on.

Which Corrugated Specification Belongs on an RFQ?

Short answer: Specify the packed product, inside dimensions, total weight, stacking and parcel route before naming a flute. ECT describes edgewise board resistance; it does not by itself guarantee finished-box compression. The converter still needs liner and medium construction, flute profile, box style, joint, print process, conditioning and an agreed packed-box test.

Use ECT as a Material Input, Not a Shipping Guarantee

ISO 3037:2022 defines a non-waxed-edge method for measuring edgewise crush resistance of corrugated fibreboard, with force applied in the flute direction. That is a repeatable board test. Finished-case performance also changes with box dimensions, score quality, slots, manufacturer's joint, print/lamination, humidity, packing pattern and how the load reaches the panels.

For sourcing, provide a performance brief and ask the converter to return the proposed board construction plus the packed-box verification route. Do not copy an ECT value from a competitor carton without matching its size, contents and supply chain.

  • State product dimensions, packed weight and unsupported voids.
  • Separate retail-display requirements from parcel or pallet requirements.
  • Identify moisture exposure, cold chain or long warehouse dwell.
  • Approve the converted sample after print, die-cutting and joint formation.

Choose Flute and Print as a System

RouteUseful whenWhat to sample
Fine flute + direct printCompact product boxes needing a clean surface and modest cushioningScore cracking, washboarding, barcode readability and panel flatness
Corrugated + litho labelRetail graphics need finer reproduction on a protective structureLaminate bond, warp, edge alignment and rub performance
Shipping caseDistribution protection and stacking dominate presentationJoint, closure, packed compression, handling and destination humidity

Send Inputs That Let the Supplier Engineer the Board

  • Inside dimensions, packed weight, product orientation and void locations.
  • Parcel, pallet, retail-ready or mixed distribution route.
  • Stack height, storage duration, humidity exposure and failure criteria.
  • Required print process, ink coverage, coating, barcode and colour tolerances.
  • Order quantity, delivery market and whether packed-box testing is required.

Worked specification example

Two buyers can request the same inside dimensions and still need different cases. A light retail product shipped one unit at a time may value print surface and dimensional efficiency; a denser product stacked for weeks may place more demand on panel and corner performance. The RFQ should therefore pair dimensions with packed weight, stacking pattern, warehouse duration, route and acceptable damage. The converter can then return a proposed flute and board construction, but approval still belongs to the converted and packed sample. Record the sample's board identification, box style, joint, print route, closure and conditioning state so a later repeat order is compared with the same reference. This also prevents a board-strength number from being copied into a purchase order without the conditions that made it meaningful.

Print method belongs in the same record. Direct flexographic print, coated liner and litho-lamination can change surface appearance, converting behaviour and moisture response. Approve colour, barcode and structure on the route being purchased, then keep the signed sample and board identification together. A later artwork-only change can follow that reference; a board, flute, joint or laminate change needs a fresh comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ECT the same as finished-box compression strength?
No. ISO 3037 measures edgewise resistance of corrugated fibreboard; finished-box performance also depends on dimensions, style, joint, converting, environment and packed load.
Should I choose E flute or B flute?
Choose from product weight, protection, print surface, dimensions and route, then compare the proposed converted samples instead of selecting by flute name alone.
When is litho-laminated corrugated useful?
It is useful when retail graphics need finer reproduction on a corrugated structure; approve laminate bond, warp, colour, barcode and packed performance together.
How should humidity be handled in the specification?
State storage and delivery exposure in the RFQ and qualify the proposed construction under agreed conditions because paper-based performance changes with moisture.
What inputs are needed for a corrugated-box quote?
Send inside dimensions, packed weight, orientation, route, stacking and storage needs, print coverage, barcode criteria, quantity, market and required packed-box evidence.
